Highlights from North Star's PTO Meeting with Bend-La Pine Nutrition Services

Our North Star Elementary PTO meeting focused on an engaging presentation by Katrina Wiest, Wellness Specialist for Bend-La Pine Schools, and her team. Katrina shared insights about the district's Nutrition Services program, highlighting achievements and initiatives to promote healthy eating and sustainability.
Key Highlights:
Nutrition Services Overview:
All 32 district schools provide free meals, serving an average of 12,667 meals daily, making the program the largest "restaurant" east of the Cascades.
Meals include scratch-made options like baked ziti, black bean burgers, and baked goods.
Farm-to-School Program:
A 20-year initiative that sources local ingredients, supporting Oregon farmers.
Highlights included partnerships with Painted Hills Beef, Thomas Orchards, and Camas Country Mill.
$339,000 in funding was allocated last year for purchasing local produce.
Special Programs:
Summer lunch program serving 8,700 meals across four sites.
Supper programs for students involved in after-school enrichment activities.
Nutrition education opportunities, including field trips to the production kitchen and farm-to-table events.
Community Engagement:
Opportunities for schools to host pizza-making fundraisers using district-provided ingredients.
Collaboration with local organizations like OSU Extension and Commute Options to support wellness initiatives.
Wellness Committee:
Oversees wellness policies and includes diverse members, such as PE teachers, nurses, and administrators.
Mission and Vision:
The Nutrition Services team is committed to providing healthy, appealing meals while supporting local agriculture and sustainability.
